The Delta State Commissioner for Health, Dr Joseph Onojaeme, has suspended a medical doctor at the General Hospital, Okwe, following an alleged physical assault on a fellow doctor during a dispute over patient care.

The incident reportedly occurred on January 1, 2026, when a female doctor was said to have been assaulted by her colleague during a disagreement over the management of a patient. The altercation escalated into a physical confrontation, prompting swift intervention from the state health authorities.

In a statement issued on January 2, Dr Onojaeme confirmed the suspension of the accused doctor pending the outcome of an investigation. He described the incident as “unacceptable” and emphasized that the Ministry of Health would not tolerate any form of violence or misconduct among medical personnel.

The Commissioner stated that a full inquiry has been launched to determine the circumstances surrounding the incident and to ensure appropriate disciplinary action is taken. He also assured the public that the safety and professionalism of healthcare workers remain a top priority for the state government.

The suspended doctor has been directed to stay away from all hospital duties while the investigation is ongoing. The Ministry has also pledged to provide support to the assaulted doctor and ensure that justice is served.

This development has sparked concern within the medical community, with calls for improved conflict resolution protocols and workplace safety measures in public health institutions.
