The Provost of the College of Medicine, University of Lagos, Prof. Afolabi Lesi, has urged the federal and state governments to improve on the welfare of doctors to curb brain drain in the Nigerian medical profession. Lesi said this in Lagos on Thursday at the inauguration of a newly rehabilitated road on the college premises, financed by the Chapel of Healing Cross, Lagos. He said, “The government must improve the conditions of service such that people don’t want to leave. The issue of emigration is not affecting only the doctors, it has to do with all health workers.   “We can never have perfect condition, it doesn’t exist anywhere in the world; but we must have a society where professionals are treated fairly. A society where they can have a life and practice the profession the way it ought to be practised. If that is done, the desire to emigrate will be less. We will never eliminate it.”   According to NOIPolls, Nigeria needs no fewer than 303,000 medical doctors and at least 10,605 new doctors annually to cover the gaping physician-patient ratio. Statistics revealed that the country has about 72,000 medical doctors registered with the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria, with only approximately 35,000 practising in Nigeria.   The provost commended the church for rehabilitating the bad road, stating that it would be beneficial to both students and staff of the college. “This project is something that both the management and students of the institution directly benefit from. We are very grateful for the Chapel’s mandate to impact their environment,” he said.
