Health workers in Ebonyi State primary healthcare facilities, yesterday, pleaded with the United States Agency for International Development -Integrated Health Programme (USAID-IHP) not to withdraw its support and interventions in the state healthcare delivery, noting that the interventions have contributed in reducing maternal mortality drastically. The workers also lauded USAID-IHP for sustaining health care facilities in the state by providing basic equipment, such as long artery forceps, cord scissors, non-toothed dissecting forceps, needle holders, episiotomy scissors, cord clamp, drapes, Ampubags and masks, Penguin bulb, Kelly’s force, sponge holding force, long artery forceps, small artery forceps, among others. The health workers disclosed this when some selected journalists, partnering with USAID-IHP, visited facilities supported by the agency in Ezza North and Ikwo councils of the state. They pleaded with USAID-IHP to continue the training of health workers, which, according to them, would have a positive effect in the discharge of their duties.Reacting, a junior community health extension worker at the Maternal and Child Healthcare facility (MCH), Okposi Umuogharu, Ezza North Council, Igwe Charity, said that the facility is currently taking care of new born babies because of USAID-IHP intervention. She added before now they usually refer newborns to the teaching hospitals, thereby endangering their chances of survival. She said: “In February this year, we had cases of newborn babies having difficulty in breathing; but with the help of the Ambu bag and mask supplied to us by USAID IHP, we were able to resuscitate the babies, and they started breathing well. Before USAID-IHP’s intervention, we usually refer newborns with breathing challenges to Federal Teaching Hospital Abakaliki (FETHA), and some of them die in the process.”ABUJA: Training Schedule for Basic Life Support BLS, Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS), Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support ACLS, First Aid, CPR, AED
