Edo Urges Vaccination, Compliance with COVID-19 Safety Protocols

(Photo by PIUS UTOMI EKPEI / AFP)Partners Swiss govt, IOM to tackle unemployment, irregular migrationEdo State Government has urged residents to complement government’s efforts at containing the COVID-19 pandemic by vaccinating against the deadly virus.Incident Manager of the state COVID-19 Task Force, Dr. Andrew Obi, gave the charge while addressing journalists in Benin City at the weekend.Obi, who decried rising number of infections and deaths in the state, restated the need for all citizens to comply with preventive protocols against the spread of the virus and remain healthy and protected.He noted that it was imperative for all residents to be vaccinated to stay alive and healthy, as more unvaccinated persons continue to die from the virus.He maintained that all persons who have died from the virus in the third wave of the pandemic in the state were unvaccinated, while over 96 per cent of cases were not vaccinated.MEANWHILE, the state’s skills development agency, EdoJobs has partnered the Swiss Government and International Organisation for Migration (IOM) to launch a community-based reintegration programme to tackle unemployment and irregular migration in the state.Unveiling the programme with the theme: Promoting Resilience And Sustainable Livelihood For Returned Migrants And Unemployed Youths Through Community-Based Reintegration, Managing Director of EdoJobs, Mrs. Ukinebo Dare, said the government would sustain partnerships to guarantee a more prosperous state.Also speaking, Senior Programmes Manager of IOM, Lagos, Saskia Kok, said the programme would contribute to improved and sustainable reintegration of returnee migrants and create livelihood opportunities for local communities.She noted that the project would set up a multipurpose vocational skills training facility combined with a wood factory in collaboration with the private sector and EdoJobs to assist returnees, potential migrants and unemployed youths within their communities to have access to socioeconomic opportunities.”Representative of the Swiss Embassy, Manuel Muhleback, said creating job opportunities for young Nigerians had become imperative, especially with the country’s rising unemployment and impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic.
