WAPCNM Nigeria Chapter Chair Visits UCTH, Welcomes Residency Nurses
In a significant show of leadership and mentorship, the Nigeria Chapter Chair of the West African Postgraduate College of Nurses and Midwives (WAPCNM), Nurse Dr. Lily-West Buloala, FWAPCNM, paid a courtesy visit to the Director of Nursing Services, Dr. Faith Ilumanze, at the University of Calabar Teaching Hospital (UCTH).
The visit coincided with the resumption of WAPCNM residency nurses at the facility, marking a pivotal moment for the incoming cohort. Nurse Dr. Lily-West was invited to deliver the induction speech, officially welcoming the residents into the program.
“The residency program is more than a clinical placement; it is the bridge between theory and practice, a season of mentorship, and a defining moment in the making of future nursing leaders,” Dr. Lily-West stated during her address.
The event was graced by distinguished faculty mentors and senior nursing leaders, including Associate Professors Ekaette Francis Asuquo and Idang Neji Ojong, as well as Dr. Akpan Margret. Together, they emphasized the importance of discipline, accountability, and lifelong learning.
Residents were encouraged to see themselves not merely as trainees, but as ambassadors of WAPCNM and future leaders of healthcare in West Africa.
Dr. Lily-West also reflected on the broader mission of nursing leadership:
“Every generation of nurses must build stronger pathways for the next. This residency is not just about skills, but about shaping leaders who will innovate, advocate, and transform healthcare.”
The WAPCNM Nigeria Chapter continues to champion excellence in nursing education and leadership across the region. The newly inducted residents were wished a fruitful and transformative journey ahead.
