The Nigeria Medical Association on Sunday said it would raise N500m cash and material to support private healthcare practitioners in Nigeria in a bid to contain and manage COVID-19 outbreak. In a statement by its president, Dr Francis Faduyile, and the secretary general, Dr Olumuyiwa Odusote, NMA called on the Federal Government to establish isolation centres outside the existing tertiary health institutions, adding that treating COVID-19 patients in existing hospitals could escalate its spread and spell doom for other patients in the hospitals. The association said, “NMA is unveiling a support programme tagged ‘Save our private health practitioners initiative’ for the sole objective of raising financial and material support (donations of quality Personal Protective Equipment and infection control consumables) to the tune of N500m, targeted at assisting private healthcare practitioners all over the nation in the containment and management of COVID-19 outbreak.“Critical care for COVD-19 patients should be at the designated treatment centres which should be located outside the existing tertiary health institutions. This is one lesson we should learn from the management of the COVID-19 in Italy.“Managing them in existing health facilities could lead to an escalation of nosocomial spread and which could spell doom for other patients in the hospital.“The policy of lockdown should be implemented but should be accompanied by large scale public enlightenment down to the grass roots. It should also be accompanied by the distribution of palliatives for the most affected segments of the population: informal sector, small businesses, the extremely poor, and the vulnerable.“With the ongoing community transmission, the NMA calls for massive upscaling of testing or mass screening using Rapid Diagnostic Testing and further confirmation with Polymerase chain reaction method, concentrating mainly in areas with high disease burden, as this would give the policy makers an exit window on when to begin relaxation of the lockdown and other restrictions.”Source: Punch
