The Nigerian Association of Resident Doctors (NARD) has announced plans to embark on a total and indefinite nationwide strike beginning Friday, October 31, 2025, at 11:59 p.m., following the Federal Government’s failure to meet their demands.
The decision, which threatens to disrupt services across public hospitals nationwide, was reached after a five-hour emergency National Executive Council (NEC) meeting held on Saturday.
In a statement posted on his X (formerly Twitter) page on Sunday, NARD President, Dr. Mohammad Usman Suleiman, said the association’s National Officers Committee (NOC) had implemented the mandate given to them by resident doctors across the country.
“The NEC has unanimously directed us to declare a total, comprehensive and indefinite strike action to commence on Friday, October 31, 2025, at 11:59 p.m.,” Suleiman announced.
He stated that the strike became inevitable after the Federal Government failed to respond satisfactorily to the 30-day ultimatum earlier issued by the association.
According to Suleiman, the NEC also approved new operational guidelines to ensure full compliance during the strike, including strike monitoring, a ‘no pay, no work’ resolution, and directives for hospital branches across the states.
He instructed all hospital branches to convene emergency congress meetings to brief members on the resolutions before the strike commences, adding that this would ensure uniform participation and prevent sabotage.
“We have reported to NEC and NEC has decided. The NOC will carry out this directive in full compliance,” he said.
The NARD president further alleged that some elements within and outside government were working against the welfare of young doctors in the country.
“Some elements in the government (and non-governmental) have very evil and exploitative plans for resident doctors in this country. We shall collectively resist it,” he stated.
Suleiman urged resident doctors to properly hand over patients and complete necessary engagements before the strike begins. He listed handover of inpatients, engagement with traditional and religious leaders, media sensitisation, and local congress mobilisation as part of the pre-strike activities.
The impending strike, if not averted, is expected to cripple healthcare services across government hospitals, adding pressure to an already strained public health system.
