FG Supports Robotic Surgery Expansion to Reduce Medical Tourism

Nigeria is taking another step toward strengthening specialised healthcare services as the Federal Government has thrown its weight behind investments in robotic-assisted surgery, describing the technology as a key tool for reducing the country’s reliance on foreign medical treatment.

Speaking at the launch of a robotic surgery programme introduced by Redeemer’s Health Village (RHV) in Lagos, the Minister of State for Health and Social Welfare, Dr. Iziaq Adekunle Salako, said advanced surgical technologies have the potential to transform healthcare delivery by offering improved precision, shorter recovery periods and better treatment outcomes for patients.

According to the minister, the introduction of robotic-assisted surgery aligns with the Federal Government’s broader healthcare reform agenda, particularly efforts aimed at improving patient outcomes and strengthening Nigeria’s healthcare value chain. He noted that expanding access to world-class medical services within the country could help reverse the trend of Nigerians travelling abroad for treatment and reduce the loss of foreign exchange associated with medical tourism.

The RHV programme, developed in partnership with RoboMed Global Inc., combines cutting-edge robotic surgical services with a dedicated training and certification pathway for healthcare professionals. The initiative is expected to equip Nigerian surgeons with the skills required to perform advanced robotic procedures locally, further building the country’s specialist healthcare capacity.

Government officials emphasised the important role of private sector investment in advancing healthcare infrastructure, noting that private providers currently account for a significant share of healthcare services in Nigeria. The administration reiterated its commitment to creating policies that encourage investment, innovation and local production across the health sector.

The robotic surgery project is also viewed as a platform for attracting diaspora expertise and investment into Nigeria’s health sector. Authorities said the collaboration demonstrates how partnerships between local institutions and Nigerian professionals abroad can help accelerate the adoption of modern medical technologies and raise healthcare standards nationwide.

Healthcare stakeholders at the launch noted that robotic-assisted surgery can provide greater surgical accuracy, minimise blood loss and support faster patient recovery. However, they stressed that long-term success will depend on continuous training, skilled personnel, adequate infrastructure and sustained collaboration between government and private healthcare providers.

The Federal Government expressed optimism that initiatives such as the RHV robotic surgery programme will contribute to the development of a stronger and more self-sufficient healthcare system, ensuring that more Nigerians can access specialised medical care without leaving the country.
